Stories , Songs and Poems

Parents always ask what they can do to help their child’s speech or language development.  The answer I give depends on the family and the child, but I always talk about books and singing -for any age.  For little ones singing includes favourite rhymes and don’t forget the gestures. If you don’t know the gestures or words-make them up-even better !

I work with lots of little ones who can’t yet talk, but you should see them do the gestures  to simple songs. Remember these?-

  • Head and Shoulders
  • Pat-a-cake
  • Twinkle Twinkle

Preschoolers need books with great pictures.  Sometimes parents get stuck on reading the exact story, but it’s more important at this age that the child gets involved.  Let your child tell the story by looking at the pictures.  When you read stories don’t forget Mother Goose and fairy tales like Goldilocks and The Three Bears.

For older children (5-12) the poems of Shel Silverstein are hilarious. If you want your child to be a good talker and reader-make it fun. Stories, songs and poems are the way to do it.
